Warren Investigates Big Tech Tax Breaks for AI Investments
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has launched a campaign to scrutinize tax breaks granted to major tech companies for their investments in AI and data centers. In a recent X post, Warren highlighted that Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META), Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), Alphabet Inc.’s (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) Google, and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) are benefiting from what she describes as 'massive tax breaks' from Trump-era provisions.
Warren argued that these tax deductions are allowing Big Tech to reduce their tax bills significantly while the federal government faces budgetary pressures, particularly on social programs. She questioned how these companies secured the tax benefits and demanded answers from executives like Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. 'We don’t know the magnitude of these tax out. We don’t know what lobbying the companies did to obtain these tax out,' Warren stated.
The senator also criticized Republicans for directing taxpayer dollars toward companies developing AI technology and building data centers. She warned that these tax breaks are not free, as they contribute to budget deficits that Republicans are addressing by cutting health care for millions of Americans.
Warren’s efforts come as other Democrats, such as Gov. JB Pritzker (D-Ill.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), have also pushed back against Big Tech’s growing political influence. Meanwhile, Meta has reportedly classified some AI data centers as 'pilot models' to claim federal tax credits, reducing its 2025 tax bill by $3.9 billion.
