Waymo Unveils Custom ASIC Chip for Autonomous Driving
Waymo, Alphabet's autonomous driving subsidiary, has made significant strides in its development of proprietary silicon chips for self-driving vehicles. The company announced it has developed a custom ASIC chip capable of processing over 1,000 trillion operations per second (TOPS), far exceeding the capabilities of general computing tasks. This application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) is purpose-built for autonomous driving and enables faster processing of sensor inputs and more efficient execution of artificial intelligence algorithms that allow vehicles to interpret and react to their surroundings.
The chip, produced by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company using its 5nm fabrication technology, represents a significant departure from Waymo's previous reliance on third-party processors from semiconductor giants including Nvidia and AMD. This shift towards vertical integration will enable faster processing of sensor inputs and more efficient execution of AI algorithms that allow vehicles to interpret and react to their surroundings.
The deployment of the Ojai robotaxi, based on Zeekr's minivan architecture, marks a significant milestone for Waymo as it becomes available to users across San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. Each vehicle features Waymo's sixth-generation self-driving technology, engineered for compatibility across different vehicle categories, alongside Google's Gemini artificial intelligence platform, functioning as an interactive passenger assistant.
