Wayne County Reconsiders $125M Tax Breaks for Google Data Center
Wayne County is set to revisit a $125 million tax incentives package for Google's data center project in Van Buren Township. The package was initially approved by the county, but County Executive Warren Evans vetoed it last week, citing concerns that the approval had been rushed and lacked public input.
The deal, which was approved by the Van Buren Township officials in May, would provide tax breaks to Google in exchange for specific requirements such as noise reduction, landscaping, and water use. However, Evans argued that there was no independent analysis or public input before the approval vote on September 15.
Evans' veto is a significant setback for the project, which has been touted as a major economic development opportunity for the area. The data center would be a hyperscale facility covering 282 acres and would provide tax benefits to Google.
