Western Union Bridges Crypto and Visa with Stablecard Launch
Western Union has launched Stablecard, a digital wallet that links Visa's payment network with blockchain infrastructure. The service allows users to receive, store, and spend USDPT stablecoins in over 37 markets, with plans to reach 60 countries by the end of the year.
The Stablecard combines a digital wallet with a Visa debit card, enabling users to make payments anywhere Visa cards are accepted, including cash withdrawals at ATMs and select Western Union locations. The 'Cash Redirect' feature allows specific international money transfers sent via Western Union to be automatically converted into USDPT and loaded onto the digital wallet.
USDPT is backed one-to-one by U.S. dollars, bank deposits, and short-term U.S. Treasury bills, aiming to maintain a stable value relative to the dollar. The token operates on the Solana blockchain, facilitating near-instant transactions and significantly lower fees compared to traditional international payment methods.
