Windows 11 Update Breaks Mouse Cursors for Some Users

Microsoft has acknowledged that its recent Windows 11 update, KB5120998, is causing issues with mouse cursors. The update, which was rolled out on August 27, 2026, includes changes to the Start menu, Search, Taskbar, and File Explorer, but has been found to break cursor settings in some cases.

Users who have installed the update are reporting that their mouse cursors are either not showing up at all or appearing too large or too small. In some cases, the cursor is being reset to default, with changes to its color or size. Microsoft has confirmed that it is investigating the issue and has updated its release notes to reflect the problem.

The update appears to be causing issues for users who have installed it on their Windows 11 PCs, regardless of whether they are using a custom cursor scheme or not. According to reports, the cursor animations could look broken, and the appearance could change, particularly if you use a custom scheme. Some cursors that were set to default are being replaced by larger cursors.

Microsoft recommends uninstalling the update to resolve the issue, as no other workarounds have been found. Users can do this by going to Settings > Windows Update > Update History > Uninstall and locating KB5120998. It's worth noting that this is not a Windows Insider Preview technical build, but an optional update offered to production PCs.
