Windows 11's Defender False Alerts Fixed, But Questions Remain

Microsoft has fixed an unusual bug in Windows 11 that caused Defender to falsely alert users that their antivirus was turned off. This issue, which began appearing on PCs in early August, occurred when a recent Defender security update triggered a bug that sent incorrect notifications.

The false alerts, which persisted even after turning off and back on the antivirus, were seen in all versions of Windows 11, as well as Windows Server and Windows 10. Microsoft acknowledged the issue at the end of August but did not reveal which specific update caused the problem.

Users who received these warnings were redirected to the home tab of Windows Security, where everything was turned on, and their PC was being protected. The company has confirmed that the fix should reach all PCs automatically unless users have blocked mandatory security updates using Registry Editor or Group Policy.

To verify whether Defender is active, users can open Windows Security and look at the current status, or run a PowerShell command to generate a security status report.
