Windows 11's File History Bug Fixed, But Update Won't Install Automatically
Windows 11 users who installed the latest September security patches have been hit by a bug that prevents File History from working. The feature, which automatically saves copies of files and allows users to recover accidentally deleted or corrupted files, is no longer functioning correctly.
The issue, which affects all current versions of Windows 10 and 11, including 21H2, 22H2, 23H2, 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, causes File History to fail to back up or restore files to an external drive or network location.
Affected devices may display a 'Reconnect your drive' message even when a compatible backup drive is connected and working properly. The 'Last Backup' timestamp may also not update, and previously backed up files might show 'No previous version available.'
Microsoft says it is working on a resolution that will be included in a future Windows update. In the meantime, users can uninstall the problematic security update by rolling back to a previous version.
