Windows 11's Hidden 'End Task' Shortcut: A Power User's Best Friend
Windows 11 users have a powerful tool at their disposal to quickly terminate frozen apps without having to open Task Manager. A feature called 'End task' allows users to right-click on an open app in the taskbar and force it to close, even if it's no longer responding.
This feature is not available in older versions of Windows and requires a few simple steps to enable. Users can find the setting under Settings > System > Advanced (or For developers in some versions), where they can toggle on the 'End Task' option.
Once enabled, users can right-click on an open app in the taskbar and select 'End task'. This will forcefully terminate the app's process, which is different from closing a window normally. The End task feature is intended for situations where the entire app has stopped behaving properly, rather than just closing individual windows.
It's worth noting that using End task can result in lost work if an app is not designed to recover unsaved data. However, some apps like Microsoft 365's Word and Excel have AutoRecover features that may restore some of the user's work when reopened.
