Windows Deployment Services Sunset Forces IT Teams to Reevaluate Imaging Strategies
Microsoft's continued phase-out of Windows Deployment Services (WDS) is forcing IT teams to reassess their deployment workflows. WDS, which relies on PXE boot for network-based imaging, has already been limited in its functionality for Windows 11 deployments.
The deprecation of WDS means that organizations will need to find alternative solutions for provisioning and maintaining devices. Microsoft recommends migrating to Configuration Manager's built-in PXE responder or using cloud-based provisioning with Windows Autopilot.
However, these alternatives come with trade-offs. Configuration Manager's PXE responder only supports unicast transfers, which can increase network utilization compared to WDS multicast deployments. Meanwhile, Windows Autopilot requires cloud services, licensing, and reliable internet connectivity during provisioning, making it unsuitable for existing devices.
