Xbox Cloud Gaming Introduces Hour Caps for Subscribers
Microsoft has introduced a new policy for its Xbox Cloud Gaming service, capping the monthly hour allowance for subscribers. Starting in November 2026, Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will get 15 hours of cloud gaming per month, while Premium and Essential subscribers will receive 10 and 5 hours respectively. Additional playtime can be purchased separately if the monthly limit is exceeded.
The move comes as Microsoft expands its Xbox Cloud Gaming service to more devices, including Hisense smart TVs and TCL-branded televisions. However, this expansion complicates the message for consumers who may have bought these devices with the expectation of unlimited cloud gaming access. The hour cap has also raised questions about the economics of game streaming and how it will impact Microsoft's gaming business.
Cloud gaming is an expensive service to run at scale, as each streamed session requires dedicated server-side resources. By introducing metered limits, Microsoft aims to constrain heavy users who were previously benefiting from unlimited hours. This shift in policy also aligns with other changes to Game Pass economics, including the reported day-one game removals and a separate cloud fee.
