Xbox Cloud Gaming Limits to Arrive November, Capping Playtime at 15 Hours
Microsoft is ending unlimited cloud gaming on Xbox starting in November. The company will introduce monthly playtime caps for Game Pass subscribers, citing rising server infrastructure costs as the reason. The new limits will affect around 4% of current subscribers, with Game Pass Ultimate members getting 15 hours of streaming per month, Premium subscribers receiving 10 hours, and Essential members limited to 5 hours.
Once users burn through their monthly allotment, they'll need to purchase additional hour bundles directly through the Xbox Store. Microsoft hasn't confirmed pricing for these top-up packages yet, but unused purchased hours will reportedly roll over to the following month.
The change also decouples cloud gaming from Game Pass entirely, allowing anyone who owns a digital Xbox title to buy playtime outright and stream their existing library without an active subscription. This new structure may seem restrictive compared to other streaming services like NVIDIA's GeForce Now, which offers a 100-hour monthly cap on its paid tiers.
