Xbox Developers Protest Mass Layoffs, Union Calls for Fair Treatment

Microsoft's Xbox division is facing backlash from unionized video game developers who are protesting against the company's plan to eliminate 3,200 jobs. The protests, which took place in nine cities across the US and Canada on August 18-19, were organized under the banner 'Save Our Devs' and mark the second coordinated protest wave against Microsoft's restructuring plans.

The layoffs, announced by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma on July 6, are part of a broader effort to reduce Microsoft's global workforce by 4,800 jobs. The majority of the cuts will affect the gaming division, with approximately one-fifth of the division's total headcount being eliminated. Half of the reduction took effect immediately, while the remaining positions are scheduled to be eliminated in phases through June 30, 2027.

The Communications Workers of America (CWA), CWA Canada, and OneBGS have been at the forefront of the protests, with CWA characterizing the July restructuring as Microsoft gaming's fifth round of layoffs in three years. The unions are demanding that Microsoft live up to its commitments under labor neutrality agreements signed as part of the company's acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Alongside the street rallies, the CWA and CWA Canada have filed unfair labor practice complaints with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), alleging that Microsoft failed to properly negotiate over the impact of the layoffs on union-represented workers before implementing them. The NLRB is now examining these claims.
