Xbox Embarks on Operational Reset with Focus on Sustainable Business Model
Microsoft's Xbox division is undergoing significant restructuring under new chief Asha Sharma, and CEO Satya Nadella has emphasized the need for a 'sustainable business model' to drive growth. This comes as part of a broader effort to realign the games division with a more scalable, platform-led strategy.
Nadella noted that he feels good about the studio and IP portfolio, but the company is under pressure to justify growth through a more diversified approach rather than relying solely on hardware or first-party output. This has led to significant changes within the organization, including 3,200 layoffs in July, with roughly half taking effect immediately.
Additionally, Microsoft announced plans to divest five studios and reorganized its games division so that Halo, Rare, and Age of Empires now sit under Activision's umbrella. This shake-up has resulted in another 268 roles being cut last week, further emphasizing the operational reset underway at Xbox.
