Xbox Faces Operational Reset as Microsoft Seeks Sustainable Business Model
Microsoft's Xbox division is undergoing significant changes as part of its effort to develop a sustainable business model. According to Satya Nadella, the company's CEO, Xbox needs to 'invent' this new approach in order to continue expanding its audience.
Nadella believes that Xbox should aim to be both a strong publisher and a platform provider across PC and Xbox. This restructuring effort has been severe, with 3,200 layoffs announced in July, half of which took effect immediately. Another 268 roles were cut last week, and the games division was reorganized so Halo, Rare, and Age of Empires now sit under Activision's umbrella.
For developers, this means that Xbox is still in a period of operational reset, with fewer teams, shifting reporting lines, and pressure to justify growth through a broader business model rather than just hardware or first-party output. Nadella feels good about the studio and IP portfolio, but the company is clearly trying to align its game business with a more scalable, platform-led strategy.
