Xbox Users Can Authenticate Digital Games on Last-Gen Consoles

Xbox users can now authenticate and unlock digital versions of their games using last-gen Xbox One consoles, thanks to Microsoft's new disc-to-digital program. The initiative allows gamers to insert current-gen Xbox Series X discs into a previous generation console, such as the Xbox One or Xbox One X, to activate a free digital copy of the game. This is not limited to just any game, however - only certain titles are eligible for this conversion.

The disc-to-digital program has been met with enthusiasm from gamers who see it as an extension of Microsoft's Play Anywhere initiative, which also aims to digitize game libraries. However, it appears that not all Xbox One and Xbox Series games will qualify for the digital unlock - Ubisoft games are specifically excluded from this program, along with some older or early Xbox One 'year-one' discs.

The disc-to-digital feature is part of a larger shift towards a potentially all-digital gaming landscape, as Microsoft prepares to release its upcoming Project Helix console. The company has yet to confirm whether the new console will have a disc drive, but given the current state of the market and diminishing availability of optical disc drives, it seems unlikely.

Austin Evans, a YouTuber who discovered this quirk in Microsoft's program, notes that using last-gen Xbox One consoles as authentication machines is just one aspect of the company's approach to gaming. 'Xbox consoles are now being used as authentication machines to digitize game libraries,' he comments. The disc-to-digital feature is seen by some as a transition point between a mostly-digital Gen 9 and a potentially all-digital Gen 10.
