Xbox's Lost Concept of True Digital Ownership Lives On
Microsoft's Xbox division explored the concept of 'true digital ownership' in 2011 as part of its plans for an always-online console. The idea was to allow users to transfer purchased digital games to others, resell or 'recycle' digital copies, and exchange physical discs at retail stores for digital versions.
The initiative was abandoned after the Xbox One's release in 2013 due to widespread criticism of the always-on requirement. However, some elements of the original concept remained, including pre-equipped discs with unique identifiers that allowed the company to implement the disc-to-digital feature in 2023.
This feature enables owners of compatible physical discs to obtain a digital game license tied to the disc and their account. If the disc is transferred to another person, the digital license transfers to the new owner.
