Yields Rise Despite Treasury Intervention, Meta Soars on New AI
The stock market indexes took a hit on Wednesday, marking their second consecutive session of decline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.8%, while the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 fell by 0.7% and 0.5%, respectively.
The Treasury Department attempted to boost liquidity in the bond market by announcing it would repurchase up to $6 billion of longer-dated government debt, but this move had an unexpected result: yields rose anyway. The 10-year yield climbed about 4 basis points to roughly 4.85%, and the 30-year yield rose above 5.3%.
The rising oil prices also contributed to the market's downturn, with Brent crude rising by 3.4% to $101.25 per barrel. The U.S. military's destruction of five Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday has raised concerns about supply disruptions and sent oil prices soaring.
However, not all news was bad. Meta Platforms saw its stock rise by a significant 6.3% after unveiling Muse, a free AI assistant that acts autonomously rather than just answering questions. This move is seen as a threat to incumbent AI assistant providers like Google's Alphabet and Amazon.
