YouTube Ditches Retention-Based View Count for Instant-Play Metric

YouTube has revamped its measurement structure and view counting system to better align with creator needs. Starting today, views are counted as soon as a video begins playing or someone enters a live broadcast.

This change brings YouTube in line with Shorts, which adopted this metric in March 2025. However, the update introduces new challenges for marketers, particularly when it comes to AI-driven data retrieval and citation.

According to BrightEdge data, half of queries citing a YouTube URL in AIO (AI Overviews) point to a specific timestamp inside the video rather than the entire video. Google AI Overviews tend to cite videos more often, while OpenAI ChatGPT cites them less often but closer to the decision-making stage.

Jim Yu, BrightEdge CEO, notes that this difference in citation methods rewards different objectives, forcing creators to choose between producing content for human clicks or AI engine citations. Brands may need to treat their YouTube libraries as databases and structure data to work across all AI engines.
