YouTube Shifts to Impression-Click View Counting Method
YouTube is rolling out a new measurement structure for its platform, changing how views are counted. As of today, views will be counted as soon as a video begins to play or someone enters a live broadcast.
This change moves YouTube away from its traditional retention-based view count to an impression-click standard and will have a significant impact on public-view metrics for brands and creators.
The update also includes a change to the way AI engines cite videos from the platform. Google's AIO (AI Overviews) point to specific timestamps inside videos, while OpenAI ChatGPT cites entire videos, serving citations closer to a decision.
According to BrightEdge data, half of queries citing a YouTube URL in AIO point to a specific timestamp, rather than citing the entire video. Short-form videos are cited 17.5% of the time, with ecommerce being the top cited category at 32.3%.
