Zoox Roars into Paid Robotaxi Service with Las Vegas Launch
Amazon's Zoox is set to launch its paid robotaxi service in Las Vegas on August 10, marking a significant milestone for the company as it seeks to compete with Alphabet's Waymo.
The service will operate using toaster-shaped shuttles that lack traditional driver controls, featuring a carriage-style design with inward-facing seats for up to four passengers and bidirectional wheels that allow it to move forward or backward without turning around.
Zoox has been offering free driverless rides in parts of Las Vegas and San Francisco since last year, transporting nearly one million riders across these cities. With the launch of paid services, Zoox will need to obtain state and local approvals to operate beyond Las Vegas.
The company's CEO, Aicha Evans, said that establishing a 'stellar, lovable commercial service' is now her focus, acknowledging that offering free rides versus charging fares creates different expectations for customers. Fares will be calculated from a base price, plus distance and time traveled from pickup to drop-off, similar to ride-hailing services.
