Aztec, the privacy-focused Ethereum layer-2 network, has launched a significant upgrade called Aztec Tierra, also known as Alpha V6. This update addresses critical vulnerabilities from earlier versions, enhances security, and doubles the speed of private transactions. The upgrade introduces formal verification of its proving system, AI-powered security testing, and faster deposits from Ethereum.
The upgrade resolves known issues, including a critical vulnerability in version 5, and includes extensive hardening measures. Private transactions now generate client-side proofs in about one second on standard devices, twice as fast as before. The new architecture reduces the time for Ethereum-to-Aztec messages from an average of two minutes to as little as 12 seconds, improving deposit and cross-chain activity speeds.
Zac Williamson, co-founder and CEO of the Aztec Foundation, emphasized the importance of built-in privacy, stating, "Privacy shouldn’t be something you have to request or trust someone else to protect. It should be built into the network." The upgrade also brings a wave of new private applications, including zk.money for payments and savings, Galactica for private AI inference, Nemi for private perpetuals trading, Nulo for private browser wallets, and Rolling Chat for private messaging.
The launch comes amid a broader push for privacy on Ethereum, with co-founder Vitalik Buterin advocating for a "cryptographic world computer" and efforts to reduce the cost of quantum-safe privacy. Aztec, which previously raised $17 million in funding, is positioning privacy as a default feature of Ethereum rather than an optional add-on.
