Adam Henson Says UK Harvest 'Not Looking Good' Amid Drought and Low Grain Prices

Countryfile presenter Adam Henson has expressed concerns about the challenges facing farmers in the UK due to prolonged dry weather. The drought and thin soil have resulted in lower yields, particularly for winter wheat and barley. According to the AHDB, this year's harvest is the earliest in at least 20 years, with combines working earlier than usual.

Henson noted that his farm's yields are down by a ton or a half per hectare compared to previous years. He also pointed out that lower grain prices have compounded the issue, making it difficult for farmers to make a profit. 'With the reduced yield and global commodity prices being quite low for wheat and barley, there's not going to be a lot of profit in growing grain,' he said.

Henson emphasized that this year's difficulties are part of a longer-term trend, with three challenging years affecting the farm's profitability. He described arable farming as 'hard' at the moment but expressed his continued enthusiasm for the profession, saying it is 'one of the best jobs in the world.'
