African Energy Moment: From Production to Lasting Value
Africa's energy sector is undergoing a significant transformation, with major discoveries and investments reshaping the continent's landscape. According to Franck Pliya, a veteran African energy player, Africa's energy moment is not in the future, but now.
Pliya, who has over 25 years of experience in the industry, emphasizes that developing resources and benefiting from them are two different things. He argues that the real measure of success should be the lasting economic and industrial value created from these resources, not just the quantity produced or exported.
Senegal and Mauritania have emerged as gas players with the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim project, but Pliya views this as only the beginning. He believes that Africa's energy moment offers opportunities for investment across the entire value chain, including exploration and production, gas processing, LNG, refining, and infrastructure development.
Pliya emphasizes the importance of connecting energy projects to industrial policy, focusing on electricity generation, fertilizers, petrochemicals, and infrastructure. He also stresses the need for strong institutions and long-term contracts to capture more value from Africa's resources.
