African Gas Reserves Will Not Secure LNG Future Without Regional Cooperation

Africa's vast gas reserves will not guarantee its LNG future without regional cooperation, according to Aka Nwokedi, Africa Regional Coordinator of the International Gas Union (IGU). Speaking at AOW Energy 2026, Nwokedi emphasized that individual export projects are not enough and that connectivity, credibility, and execution are key.

Nwokedi noted that while countries developing gas resources in isolation can boost LNG production and exports, this approach will not resolve Africa's energy deficit or maximize the economic benefits of its gas. He argued that by connecting markets, aggregating demand, sharing infrastructure, and aligning policies, LNG can become more than an export commodity.

The IGU is committed to supporting dialogue and collaboration around policies and strategies that can accelerate the responsible development and utilization of natural gas across Africa.
