Alberta Sees $2-Billion Budget Surplus Amid Oil Price Surge

Alberta's finances are on the mend thanks to surging oil prices in the wake of the Middle East war. The province's latest fiscal update predicts a $2-billion surplus for the 2026 Alberta budget, a significant turnaround from the original expected deficit of $9.4 billion.

The increase in oil prices has had a direct impact on the province's treasury, with every dollar rise adding $680 million to the coffers. The average price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) has increased from an initial estimate of US$60.50 per barrel to just above US$88 per barrel since April.

Finance Minister Jason Nixon celebrated the quarterly windfall but warned that energy prices can change quickly and the forecast could take another turn. He also acknowledged that the same prices driving up the government's revenue are also driving up the cost of living for Albertans.

Nixon hinted at possible relief measures, including another round of $100 fuel tax rebate cheques or reducing the tax on gasoline, but did not commit to anything specific. The province is also monitoring inflation and trade uncertainty in the ongoing US-Canada trade war.
