Alberta Separation Referendum Loses Support Amid Growing Opposition

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's support for a separation referendum has been met with growing opposition from Albertans, who are increasingly rejecting the idea of breaking away from Canada.

A recent poll by Ipsos found that 70% of Albertans want to remain in Canada, while only 14% would choose to leave if given the option. A separate survey conducted by Janet Brown Opinion Research for CBC News also showed 72% of Albertans favoring staying in Canada.

The polls come as Premier Smith struggles to maintain support within her United Conservative Party, which has been hijacked by separatists. Smith's decision to hold a separation referendum was not part of her campaign platform, and many have criticized the move as a distraction from pressing issues facing the province.

Despite claims that Ottawa has mistreated Alberta, Premier Smith's own party has had little success in addressing the concerns of the province's oil industry. In fact, Canada's crude oil production rose 41% between 2013 and 2025, with Alberta setting new records for oil production in 2025.

As the separation referendum draws near, it appears that most Albertans are united in their opposition to the idea of leaving Canada. It remains to be seen whether Premier Smith will continue to support the referendum or attempt to distance herself from its consequences.
