Alberta Separatists Unfazed by Pipeline Announcement

Alberta separatists are pushing for independence despite Ottawa's announcement of a new oil pipeline to the B.C. coast, which they say doesn't address their grievances.

Cory Morgan, an online commentator and organizer with the Pathway to Independence group, said that the pipeline deal 'doesn't change the system whatsoever' and that the separation issue is 'much deeper than the pipeline for people like me and the dedicated, independence supporters.'

Premier Danielle Smith has called a referendum on Alberta's status within Canada, set for October 19, saying that the debate needs resolution.

Separatist leaders say they will continue to push for independence regardless of the pipeline announcement, citing concerns over the time and resources required to get Alberta's resources to market.
