Alberta Separatists Unfazed by Pipeline Breakthrough
The Alberta separatist movement shows no signs of slowing down despite a major breakthrough in the province's pipeline plans. The Pacific Link pipeline, now declared a project of national interest, is set to transport oil from Alberta to British Columbia, but leaders behind the independence push say it doesn't change their stance.
Cory Morgan, an organizer with Pathway to Independence, stated that 'this doesn't change the system whatsoever.'
He emphasized that the separation issue is much deeper than the pipeline for dedicated supporters of independence. Premier Danielle Smith has been criticized for promoting joint provincial-federal projects as evidence that Alberta benefits from staying in Canada.
The referendum on Alberta's secession from Canada will take place on October 19, with separatist leaders still planning to push for a second vote on separation even if the first question is answered in favor of staying.
