Alberta Stays Silent on Gas Tax Cut Amid Poilievre's Federal Fuel Break Plea
Alberta's government has declined to commit to cutting its gas tax despite an appeal from Pierre Poilievre, the federal Official Opposition Leader.
Poilievre called on Prime Minister Mark Carney to extend the suspension of the federal 10-cent-per-litre gas tax until Canada Day 2027, citing continued high pump prices for motorists and cost-of-living issues.
The Alberta government introduced a fuel tax relief scheme in 2022 that offered graduated discounts on the province's 13-cent-per-litre fuel tax. The program was paused in June and replaced with a one-time $100 energy rebate, which has been claimed by 1.2 million out of 3.4 million eligible Albertans.
The office of Finance Minister Jason Nixon said the government would continue to monitor oil prices and determine the best way to deliver relief to Albertans if they remain high over future quarters.
