Alberta's Solar Plan: A Double Standard?

Alberta's Environment and Protected Areas Minister Grant Hunter recently announced plans to recycle and ban solar panels from landfills, citing concerns about their environmental impact. However, Dale Johnson of Okotoks questions why this is being done while the oil and gas industry continues to leave behind its own mess.

Johnson argues that the government's rhetoric on protecting taxpayers from future clean-up costs is disingenuous when it comes to the fossil fuel industry. He points out that these companies are subsidized with taxpayer dollars upfront, during construction, and after-life environmental costs, leaving Albertans on the hook for insurance risks.

The Alberta government provides various forms of support to oil and gas companies, including grants, loans, loan guarantees, and insurance coverage. Johnson believes this is unfair and that a 150-year-old industry should be able to stand on its own two feet and shoulder its own responsibilities.
