Argentina Corn Exports Surge Amid Global Grain Trade Shifts
Argentina's corn exports are surging as global grain trade shifts due to war-related disruptions in Ukraine and extreme heat in Europe. The country is poised to export a record 10 million metric tons of corn during August and September 2026, according to Reuters.
The shift matters beyond Argentina, as it potentially influences commodity prices, feed costs, and export competition watched closely by U.S. farmers, grain merchants, and agribusiness investors. Argentina's advantage begins in the field, with a record crop of 71.7 million metric tons, nearly 20% above the previous production record established five years earlier.
Gustavo Idigoras, head of Argentina's CIARA-CEC grain exporters and crushers chamber, said Argentine corn is currently highly competitive in both price and available volume. North Africa has emerged as one of the clearest destinations for Argentina's additional supply, with shipments to the region climbing 45% during the first seven months of 2026 to 6.5 million metric tons.
Brazil's ethanol expansion also opens another door for Argentine corn, as the country absorbs a growing share of domestic corn that might otherwise move through export ports. Brazilian corn consumption increased 7.1% season over season to 98 million metric tons in 2025/26, while its export trend has declined nearly 20% from a record 53 million metric tons over the past three years.
