Argentina Threatens UK with Court Action Over Falkland Islands Oil Drilling Dispute

Argentina's president, Javier Milei, has threatened to take court action against the UK unless it suspends an oil drilling project off the coast of the Falkland Islands. The Sea Lion Project, operated by Navitas Petroleum Development and Production Ltd (NPDP), a UK-based subsidiary of Israeli Navitas Petroleum, aims to extract oil from the North Malvinas Basin for over 30 years, starting in March 2028.

The project has been approved by the British government, with Milei accusing the UK of 'illegitimate exploitation' of Argentina's resources. In a statement on social media, he instructed his Foreign Ministry and legal teams to initiate international arbitration against the UK, stating that 'the Malvinas are Argentine, and they are defended with facts, not words.'

Navitas Petroleum has secured all necessary approvals and funding for the project, which is expected to create jobs across the Falkland Islands and the UK supply chain. The companies involved see no reason to heed Milei's warnings, citing their valid licenses issued by the British government.
