Armed Group Shuts Down Libya's Al-Sharara Oil Pipeline
An armed group has shut down an oil pipeline at Libya's major Al-Sharara oil field, causing a significant drop in production. The closure has threatened output from one of the country's key oil fields, which contains Africa's largest proven oil reserves.
The National Oil Corporation (NOC) reported that the shutdown caused pressure to build up within the crude oil pipeline, leading to a substantial reduction in production at the Sharara field. If the closure continues for an extended period, the NOC may be compelled to declare 'force majeure', allowing suppliers to suspend contractual obligations due to circumstances beyond their control.
The Al-Sharara field is located 900 kilometers south of Tripoli and supplies one of the country's main export terminals in Zawiya. The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges facing Libya, which has been embroiled in a civil war for 15 years since Gaddafi's overthrow in 2011.
