Asian Demand Fuels August Oil Price Surge
Oil prices surged in August 2026 due to growing demand from Asian refineries and increased betting by financial speculators. The OPEC basket average rose $3.45 to $86.44 per barrel, while Brent reached $88.08 and WTI hit $82.45.
Asian nations are driving the growth in oil demand, with India projected to grow at 6.6%, China at 4.6%, and the US at 2.2% this year. Non-OPEC countries' demand is expected to rise by 500,000 barrels per day in 2026, offsetting a drop of 100,000 bpd in OECD nations.
The increased production from OPEC+ members, including the United States, Brazil, Canada, and Argentina, is also contributing to the price increase. However, commercial inventories in OECD countries remain a concern, with stocks standing at 2.76 billion barrels, 206.4 million barrels below the 2015-2019 average.
