Asia's Rich Opt for Gold Over Crypto as Safe Haven

Investors in Asia's high-net-worth community are not selling their cryptocurrency holdings, but rather shifting new funds into more traditional safe havens.

A recent survey from HSBC found that wealthy investors in Malaysia and Singapore are sticking to their current investments, while allocating new money towards gold, bank deposits, or alternative financial investments.

The survey noted that investors are prioritizing the core of their portfolios, balancing protection and growth, and diversifying with intent. Allocations continue to shift across cash, equities, and gold, with cash holdings providing a buffer for potential opportunities.

In contrast, digital asset investment products suffered outflows of approximately $4.21 billion over the past three weeks, according to CoinShares data. The World Gold Council reported that gold demand reached 1,231 tonnes in Q1 2026, an increase of 2% year-on-year, with a record-breaking value of $193 billion.
