Australian Miners Ditch Iron Ore for Copper Amid AI-Driven Demand Boom
Australia's mining industry is shifting its focus from iron ore to copper as demand for the metal grows due to increasing spending on data centers, electrification, and power grids.
The trend is driven by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) and related infrastructure needs, which are creating a structural deficit in the copper industry. This has led major miners such as BHP and Rio Tinto Group to reposition themselves with greater emphasis on copper production.
Copper prices have been boosted by record highs, with BHP reporting that it has reached 50% of its annual revenue for the first time. Fortescue Ltd., which is heavily weighted towards iron ore, posted negative earnings growth in contrast.
Analysts caution that investors should remain focused on long-term goals due to industry shifts and market fluctuations. 'The cut and thrust of it is that copper demand is growing while iron ore isn't, and the market is rewarding that,' said David Tuckwell, chief investment officer for ETF Shares in Sydney.
