Azerbaijan Unveils Five-Year Renewable Energy Plan to Maximize Gas Export Reserves
Azerbaijan has announced plans to transform its energy landscape by maximizing gas export reserves through a five-year renewable energy push, President Ilham Aliyev stated at the Baku investment forum.
The country's domestic power generation will shift from relying on natural gas to wind and solar power, freeing up substantial volumes of gas for export. The ambitious target is to reduce natural gas consumption for power generation to its absolute minimum, allowing Azerbaijan to redirect billions of cubic meters towards lucrative long-term supply contracts with European partners.
The government has already begun signing agreements with international energy companies to develop wind and solar farms across the Karabakh and East Zangezur economic regions. This will be complemented by offshore wind projects in the Caspian Sea, which are designed to operate independently of the gas grid and ensure that domestic electricity demand is met without cannibalizing the export portfolio.
