Azerbaijan's TAP Expansion Strengthens Energy Links with Albania

Azerbaijan has strengthened its energy links with Albania through an expansion of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), which now has additional capacity to transport 1.2 billion cubic meters of gas per year as of January 2026.

This increased capacity will enable Azerbaijan to boost its gas exports to Europe, where demand for new sources remains strong. The TAP expansion also opens up opportunities for expanding the geography of supplies, and Albania's Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Erlind Sulo has noted that the country is well-positioned to receive natural gas through TAP.

The proposed construction of a large-scale LNG storage and regasification terminal on the Albanian coast, expected to be connected to TAP, aims to create an additional source of natural gas supply not linked to Russia. This project would provide greater flexibility in responding to changing energy needs in the Western Balkans and Southeast Europe.
