B.C.'s Fossil Fuel Addiction Fuels Devastating Wildfires
The recent regional wildfires in British Columbia have triggered a state of emergency for the fifth time in ten years, with the premier likening one of the fires to 'a bomb going off in the region.'
At the same time, the province is doubling down on fossil fuels, which are the root cause of climate change and account for 68% of global greenhouse gas pollution.
B.C. produces 39% of Canada's fossil gas, most of which is used locally or exported to the U.S. Pacific Northwest. However, with six large-scale LNG export projects in various stages, the province will release an additional 21 million tonnes of greenhouse gas pollution every year.
This increase in pollution would be equivalent to one-third of B.C.'s annual emissions and would abandon its climate targets as communities burn to the ground.
