Baltic Nations Unite Against Russian Grain Transit

Estonia has joined Latvia and Lithuania in opposing Russia's plans to transport grain through their ports. According to Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, his country is prepared to take measures to prevent Russian grain shipments from being rerouted to Estonia.

Tsahkna stated that 'Our message to freight carriers is clear: do not plan to transport Russian grain through Estonia. We do not consider it acceptable for Russia to start using Estonian ports to export its grain.'

Russia, which is Ukraine's key competitor in the grain market, has been seeking alternative routes after shelling Ukrainian grain and oilseed terminals and port infrastructure in the Odesa region.

The US Department of Agriculture reports that Ukraine and Russia accounted for 27.3% of global wheat exports in the 2025-2026 marketing year.
