Bangladesh Gas Crisis Worsens as RLNG Supply Drops by 550 mmcfd

The shutdown of Excelerate Energy's floating LNG terminal has led to a significant drop in regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) supply to Bangladesh's national grid. According to Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution PLC, RLNG supply has fallen by another 100 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd), bringing the total shortfall to around 550 mmcfd since the shutdown.

The sharp reduction in RLNG supply is causing low gas pressure at households, industries, captive power plants, and CNG filling stations. Petrobangla sources attribute the latest decline to an inventory shortage after a scheduled LNG cargo failed to arrive on time due to the ongoing supply disruption.

Before the shutdown, Bangladesh received around 1,000 mmcfd of RLNG from two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), with one operated by Excelerate Energy capable of supplying up to 600 mmcfd. The prolonged supply disruption has affected industrial production and transport services, with long queues persisting at CNG filling stations in Dhaka and other parts of the country.
