State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit represented Bangladesh at the 15th LNG Producer-Consumer Conference 2026 in Tokyo. The conference focused on 'Advancing LNG for the Future: Resilience and Reliability.'

Amit highlighted the challenges of ensuring energy security in the face of geopolitical changes, supply disruptions, and global fuel market instability.

Bangladesh's current energy situation is precarious, with rapidly rising fuel consumption due to population growth, industrialization, urbanization, and increasing electricity demand.

Natural gas remains a key fuel for power generation, fertilizer production, industries, and commercial activities, but domestic production cannot meet the growing demand. Imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) is becoming increasingly important in Bangladesh's gas supply system.

The country currently receives around 1,100 million cubic feet of LNG per day through two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), with an annual demand of nearly 7 million tonnes. To meet the growing demand, infrastructure expansion work is progressing rapidly.
