Bangladesh Seeks Coal-Fired Power Boost Amid Energy Crisis
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has instructed the power and energy ministry to increase coal-fired power generation in Bangladesh to free up more gas for industries, ensuring timely LNG imports. This move aims to address the country's current energy crisis.
The prime minister reviewed the demand and supply of various fuels, including gas, fuel oil, coal, and furnace oil. He also directed the ministry to strengthen the country's energy supply system to make Bangladesh a large-scale manufacturing hub by 2029.
Currently, Bangladesh relies heavily on imported LNG due to insufficient domestic gas production. The government is building up fuel-oil reserves to cover 90 days of demand and has enough stock for 57 days with current import arrangements.
