Bank Strike Postponed as India's Banking Sector Faces Multiple Challenges
Banking unions in India have postponed their scheduled three-day nationwide strike after receiving commitments from the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) on key demands, including implementing a five-day workweek.
The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) had announced the strike action to commence on Monday. The postponement comes as a relief to customers and banks alike, who were bracing for disruptions in banking services.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court will hear a plea challenging the Centre's decision to introduce a Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on certain UPI person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions above ₹2,000. This change is set to take effect from October 15.
In other market news, gold and silver prices fell up to 2.8% due to rising oil prices, a stronger US dollar, and higher bond yields. The decline in gold imports by India since May 2020 has also been a topic of discussion, with brokerage firm Kotak Institutional Equities warning that it may lead to a rise in unofficial gold imports.
