BC Hydro Buys Gas-Fired Power Plant Amid Growing Electricity Demand

BC Hydro has purchased Island Generation, a 275-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant on Vancouver Island. The move is at odds with the utility's mandate to generate 100% of its electricity from clean or renewable sources by 2030.

The purchase was announced by Energy Minister Adrian Dix, who cited an anticipated surge in power demand over the next few years due to mining and liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects, as well as increasing numbers of electric vehicles and heat pumps in B.C. homes.

According to BC Hydro, the plant will be used primarily for peak demand periods, such as hot summer days and cold winter nights. It can generate enough electricity to power about 125,000 homes, making it an important local asset.

However, some experts say that the purchase shows a disconnect between B.C.'s emissions reduction ambitions and reality. Evan Pivnick, associate director of public affairs for Clean Energy Canada, called the Island Generation purchase an 'unfortunate necessity' due to BC Hydro's failure to plan for future electricity demand.

BC Hydro has acknowledged that its planning has not kept pace with growing electricity demands, leading to a 20% increase in power demand by 2030 and a 50% increase by 2050.
