BGMEA Assures Buyers Gas Supplies Will Improve Soon
Buyers of Bangladeshi garments have expressed concern over the ongoing gas crisis and its impact on production schedules. The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) met with representatives of Buyers Forum Bangladesh in Dhaka to address these concerns.
The BGMEA informed buyers that one floating storage and regasification unit would be repaired by 6-7 August, after which gas supplies would begin to improve. Another unit is expected to be installed within the next 18 to 24 months, and a land-based liquefied natural gas storage facility is also being considered.
Buyers were also assured that factories in Chattogram and Sylhet faced relatively fewer disruptions compared to Dhaka, Gazipur, Savar, and Mymensingh. BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu said the government had informed them that the country's energy situation would improve significantly over the next two years.
Garment exporters reported that overseas buyers have become increasingly concerned about whether Bangladesh will be able to meet agreed shipment schedules under the current gas supply conditions. Some buyers have contacted exporters to ask if export orders could be shipped on time, and some compliance teams had visited factories to examine generator operating records.
