Global food prices have reached a four-year high due to escalating military strikes on vessels and port infrastructure across the Black Sea. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has severely disrupted vital grain trade, pushing the global Food Price Index to its highest level since March 2022.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization reported that its Food Price Index averaged 133.3 points in August 2026. This index cited 'continued uncertainty surrounding Black Sea export flows' as a primary driver behind rising prices for wheat, corn, barley, and other essential commodities.

Hostilities in July caused more seafarer deaths than in the entire preceding period of the conflict, with estimates from the Turkish seafarers' union indicating 23 people died during attacks on 35 vessels in the Black Sea. The head of the International Maritime Organization condemned the 'deterioration of maritime security around the globe,' as attacks spread.

Grain exports have fallen sharply, with Ukraine exporting only about 21 percent of normal capacity between August 1 and August 26. Russia's outbound shipments have also dropped, with estimates suggesting they were down to 40% of normal export capacity in August.
