The ongoing conflict in Ukraine's Black Sea region is escalating, threatening to disrupt global food supplies. Since July 6, Ukrainian drone units have been targeting ships calling at Russian-controlled ports in the Sea of Azov and the neighboring Black Sea, including oil tankers and freighters carrying grain from Russian-occupied territories.

According to Ukrainian reports, 196 ships and other watercraft have been damaged since then, 126 in the Sea of Azov and 70 in the Black Sea. The attacks aim to cut off supply routes to the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014.

Moscow responded by expanding its attacks on Ukrainian port facilities in the Odessa area, claiming to have struck dozens of vessels and port infrastructure. The conflict has forced shipping company Maersk to suspend operations at the port of Odessa, with ships being rerouted to the Romanian port of Constanța.

The disruption is expected to drive up grain prices significantly, as Russia and Ukraine account for 25-30% of global wheat exports and about 11% of corn exports. Wheat prices on the Chicago Board of Trade are already 30% higher than they were a year ago, while corn prices have risen by about 10%.
