Black Sea Conflicts Squeeze Global Grain Supplies

Global grain supplies are facing renewed threats due to ongoing conflicts in the Black Sea region. Ukraine and Russia, two major wheat exporters, have seen their combined exports drop significantly since hostilities resumed. In August last year, they exported 6.3 million tonnes of wheat together, but this August their combined exports may reach only around 2.5 million tonnes.

The disruption is largely due to Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and merchant ships in the region. Analysts warn that if the situation continues, prices for grains will likely rise further. In fact, wheat prices have already reached two-year highs, with some 25% increase from their level at the start of the year.

Experts are debating whether a second global grain crunch is on the way, citing factors such as water levels in the Danube River and damaged port facilities. While importing countries can postpone imports due to their own recent harvests, many are still dependent on international supplies. As a result, prices may continue to rise.

Some analysts believe that if disruptions persist, prices will keep heading up, while others predict that markets will adjust and find new routes for grain exports. The world is still far from the grain crunch of four years ago, but this situation bears close watching.
