Black Sea Grain Crisis Escalates, Threatening Global Markets
The Black Sea grain crisis has escalated as Russia and Ukraine intensify attacks on each other's ports, vessels, and export infrastructure. This disruption is affecting shipments of wheat, corn, vegetable oil, and other agricultural commodities through one of the world's most important corridors.
Russia is the largest wheat exporter, while Ukraine is a major supplier of grain and other agricultural products. Together, they play a significant role in feeding global markets.
Ukraine reported 67 strikes on port facilities during July, along with 35 attacks on vessels in port and 22 attacks at sea. This compares to just 14 vessel attacks in all of 2025.
The impact is already showing up in Ukraine's export outlook, with the country estimating it could export approximately 29.6 million tons of agricultural products during the 2026-27 marketing year, less than half of an earlier forecast of 64.4 million tons. Wheat exports could take a significant hit, falling an estimated 53% to 8.3 million tons.
